West Ham United are reportedly interested in signing Lyon midfielder Thiago Mendes in the summer transfer window.
That’s according to football journalist Jorge Nicola who claims that the Hammers could be a ‘big problem’ for Flamengo this summer after we entered the race for the Brazilian’s signature.
Flamengo allegedly want to sign the 30-year-old Lyon ace but West Ham will be able to pay him a lot more money than the Brazilian side.
Central midfield is definitely an area at the London Stadium where David Moyes needs to strengthen in the summer.
Mark Noble will retire at the end of the season whilst Alex Kral will almost certainly be sent back to Spartak Moscow after an underwhelming loan spell at the London Stadium.
And it seems as though Moyes has a specific target in mind to help bolster his engine room options…
West Ham eyeing Thiago Mendes swoop
According to Jorge Nicola, the Lyon ace is very much on the Hammers’ radar ahead of the summer transfer window.
Signing a top-class central midfielder will be vital for David Moyes this summer. We have to say though, we think that the Scot might be targeting someone younger and more athletic than the 30-year-old Brazilian.
Mendes joined Lyon from Lille in the summer of 2019 for around £20 million (Transfermarkt). He now has just 12 months remaining on his current deal with the Ligue 1 outfit though. So perhaps West Ham could pick him up for a bargain fee in the summer.
The Brazilian, 30, is a very decent footballer.
In 27 Ligue 1 outings for Lyon this season, Mendes has averaged 1.3 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 1.9 clearances per match (Who Scored).
He has made 53.7 passes on average per game and has recorded an impressive completion rate of 88.9% (Who Scored).
Mendes has been described as a ‘brilliant player’ by Soccer Souls.
We strongly believe that David Moyes will be looking elsewhere though.
The Scot has consistently made it clear that he wants to bring young, hungry and physically robust players to the London Stadium.
It is debatable whether Mendes could adapt quickly to the Premier League from Ligue 1. Whilst he would be a decent addition for West Ham, we strongly believe that there are much better, younger and more cost effective options out there this summer…
