Report: West Ham failed to sign 24-year-old after bid fell £7m short

According to a report from Het Belang Van Limburg, West Ham failed with a deadline day move for Standard Liege ace Samuel Bastien.

The Hammers allegedly tabled a late £11 million bid for the Belgian midfielder. But Standard Liege were not interested in doing business for anything less than £18 million (Het Belang Van Limburg).

West Ham released Jack Wilshere and sold Josh Cullen on transfer deadline day. And now we are incredibly light in midfield.

It seems as though the Hammers at least made an effort to address that issue, however. Even though it may have been just been an empty gesture from the board designed to show the West Ham fans that they were actually trying to bring some new faces in on deadline day.

Bastien would have been a decent signing for us.

It’s just a shame that we couldn’t stretch to the £18 million needed to obtain his services.

Bastien is a powerful, energetic and dynamic defensive midfielder. And the 24-year-old certainly would have strengthened our options in the middle of the park.

On the flip-side, however, £18 million would have been a lot of money to pay out for someones who is totally unproven in the Premier League.

Who knows? Perhaps we will be able to find better value in the Championship. We won’t be banking on it, however.
