According to a report from the Mirror, West Ham are eyeing a move to sign Chelsea striker olivier Giroud in January.

The report suggests that Hammers boss David Moyes is prepared to sell Andriy Yarmolenko in order to fund a move to sign the Blues hitman.

Olivier Giroud is out of contract with Chelsea in the summer. So perhaps Frank Lampard will be willing to sanction the French World Cup winner’s Stamford Bridge exit in January rather than risk losing him for nothing in six months time.

The Mirror claims that David Moyes is a big fan of the 34-year-old striker. West Ham allegedly could make a move to sign the former Arsenal ace for a bargain fee next month.

Whether Chelsea are ready to sell, however, remains to be seen.

Giroud has scored 218 goals in 533 career club games. A very decent record indeed. He has so much more about him than just scoring goals, however.

Giroud – Haller clone or upgrade?

Some West Ham fans will question what the Chelsea ace has that Sebastien Haller doesn’t.

It could be argued that if Haller struggles in our system then so will Giroud.

This quite simply isn’t the case, however. The Ivory Coast international has absolutely no physical presence – the polar opposite to the Frenchman.

Giroud is the best there is at holding the ball up and bullying defenders. To compare to two is quite frankly laughable.

The Chelsea ace is stronger in the air than Haller, is better at playing with his back to goal and it could even be argued that he is a better finisher than the West Ham hitman.

Sure, Haller scores the odd wonder goal, but he misses his fair share of sitters as well.

The way in which the Chelsea ace cushions his knockdowns highlights just how poor Haller is at doing the same job. The ball sticks to the Frenchman whilst it often bounces off the Ivorian.

David Moyes bringing Giroud to the London Stadium in January on a short-term deal would be a very wise move. And those who fiercely defend Haller to the hilt might then understand how a big target man should play, regardless of what system they are deployed in.

And moving Andriy Yarmolenko on in order to bring the World Cup winner to east London would be an acceptable sacrifice from the Hammers.
