Report: Man City drop Declan Rice interest but give West Ham a new problem in the transfer window

Man City have dropped their Declan Rice interest but will give West Ham a new problem in the transfer window as a result.

As West Ham fans know only too well Rice has been incessantly linked with a move away for the last two years.

The likes of Manchester City, Man United, Chelsea and Real Madrid have all been consistently linked.

Your Club's SURPRISE Star This Season

But with Rice declaring earlier this season that he wants to compete for and win ‘all the top trophies’, mega rich Man City have emerged as one of the star’s most realistic destinations should he leave West Ham.

Indeed reports have abound for some time that Man City boss Pep Guardiola has identified Rice as the replacement for Fernandinho (Daily Mail, The Sun).

West Ham have made it clear in recent weeks that Rice will not be sold this summer.

And the Hammers talisman himself delivered a clear message on his future at the West Ham awards night recently.

Now it seems Guardiola has got the message loud and clear.

Because Man City have dropped their Rice interest but will give West Ham a new problem in the transfer window as a direct result.

According to The Daily Mail, Man City will instead move for West Ham target Kalvin Phillips, the man the Hammers bid over £50m for in January.

The Daily Mail claims Guardiola wants Phillips to replace his Brazilian veteran who will be leaving The Etihad this summer – possibly along with fellow midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

The Mail’s report claims Man City will face competition from West Ham – as well as Man United and Aston Villa – for central midfield ace Phillips.

But when Man City are involved is there any such thing as competition?

So while it is good news for West Ham in one sense as it would mean City do not move for Rice, the flip side is that they probably won’t be getting Phillips as Moyes looks to recreate the heart of England’s midfield at the London Stadium.

If Man City need a new central midfielder then so too do West Ham.

Retiring captain Mark Noble said an emotional farewell to the club he has served all his career in the 2-2 draw against Man City last weekend.

Alex Kral does not look likely to have his loan extended and West Ham cannot go into another football with European football with Rice and Tomas Soucek as their only genuine central midfield options.
