Report makes surprise Matheus Nunes claim after West Ham scouting mission

West Ham United are allegedly still keen to sign Matheus Nunes, despite already having been rejected by the player.

That’s according to a report from A Bola (translated by Sport Witness) who claim that Sporting still want €50 million £42 million) from the Hammers for the 23-year-old midfielder.

It was claimed late last week that West Ham had offered Nunes an £80k-a-week deal – six times his current salary at Sporting.

David Moyes then addressed the media on Friday night though and admitted that the Portugal international had knocked back the Hammers’ advances, as quoted via the club’s official website:

“We bid for him but the boy chose not to come. We are trying to add players that can make us competitive and try and put us near the top of the league. We want good quality players, but sometimes good quality players have other options or other ideas.”

It seems as though West Ham are far from giving up on Nunes though…

West Ham still keen to sign Matheus Nunes

The Hammers still want to sign the 23-year-old according to A Bola, and performed a scouting mission on the midfielder during Sporting’s 3-0 win over Rio Ave on Saturday.

The Portugal international scored an absolute rocket during the game and the West Ham scouts would certainly have been impressed:

Nunes would be a stunning signing for West Ham.

At 23 and 6ft tall, Nunes fits perfectly into the profile of player Moyes needs to add to his ranks.

The Portugal international bagged four goals and four assists in 50 games for Sporting last season (Transfermarkt).

In 33 league outings for Sporting last term, Nunes averaged 1.3 tackles per match. During those appearances, the 23-year-old made 42.4 passes on average per game and recorded an impressive completion rate of 86.2% (Who Scored).

He has been described by The Hard Tackle as a potentially ‘world-class’ player.

Nunes can play as a defensive midfielder, in a more orthodox central role or even as a number 10.

The Portuguese ace possesses exceptional technical ability and is great at receiving the ball in tight spaces. He clearly has the physical attributes needed to succeed in the Premier League as well.

And if West Ham manage to sign Matheus Nunes, it will be a huge statement from the club and in particular, the owners.

Unfortunately though, we just can’t see this one happening.
