Report: Hans Vanaken performs complete U-turn and now wants to join West Ham

Hans Vanaken is allegedly keen to join West Ham United from Club Brugge in the summer transfer window.

That’s according to a report from 90 Min who claim that the 29-year-old wants a London Stadium move but the Hammers’ first bid for the attacking midfielder has been rejected by Club Brugge.

West Ham are said to have offered £8.5 million for Vanaken, with the Belgian outfit holding out for closer to £17 million, although it is believed that we could pick him up for closer to £12.5 million (90 Min).

Vanaken now being keen to join the Hammers is in direct contrast to how he felt back in 2020. In fact, the 21-capped Belgium international has performed a complete U-turn.

Back in 2020, the 29-year-old rejected the chance to join West Ham in a £15 million deal (The Mirror). And he now appears to have come full circle…

Hans Vanaken wants West Ham move

90 Min reckon that the Belgian wants to move to the London Stadium to link up with David Moyes before the transfer window closes.

Whether West Ham make an acceptable offer for him remains to be seen, however.

Vanaken is a very good player.

The Belgian bagged 16 goals and seven assists in 45 games in the 2020/21 season and racked up 15 goals and 12 assists in 50 outings last term (Transfermarkt).

Standing at 6ft 5in tall, Vanaken is a real unit and has the kind of physicality needed to succeed in the Premier League.

There is one problem as far as we’re concerned though. The Club Brugge midfielder will be 30 later this month. That obviously doesn’t correlate with the Red Bull Model that David Moyes supposedly wants to implement at the London Stadium.

Moving to the Premier League from the Belgian league and succeeding is a tough ask for anybody. Let alone someone who is touching 30.

We think that there are better options out there for Moyes to explore this summer.

And bringing Hans Vanaken to West Ham may end up being a mistake.

Having said that, if Moyes really wants the Club Brugge midfielder then we will back his decision 100%.
