West Ham could be set to go toe-to-toe with Liverpool and Juventus for the signature of Borussia Monchengladbach ace Denis Zakaria in the January transfer window according to a report from Give Me Sport’s Peter O’Rourke.
Hammers boss David Moyes absolutely must strengthen his ranks at the London Stadium in January.
The Scot needs to sign a top-class striker and an established centre-back as a matter of urgency. It could be argued that West Ham need a new left-back and an attacking midfielder/winger as well.
Moyes’s priorities will certainly be to sign a striker and a central defender. He must address those particular two weaknesses first and foremost.
It seems as though Moyes has ideas of bolstering his ranks in other areas as well, however.
West Ham eyeing January bid for Denis Zakaria
Give Me Sport’s Peter O’Rourke claims that the Hammers are set to battle it out with Liverpool and Juventus for the 25-year-old midfielder’s signature in January.
Despite the need for Moyes to bolster other areas of his squad, we still think that Zakaria would be a very strong addition for West Ham.
The Monchengladbach ace is a defensive midfielder by trade but crucially as far as West Ham are concerned, he can play in the centre-back position as as well.
In 15 Bundesliga outings this season, the Switzerland international has bagged two goals and one assist. During those appearances he has averaged 1.5 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 1.2 clearances and 1.5 dribbles per match. The 25-year-old has made 50.5 passes on average per game and has recorded a completion rate of 90.1% (Who Scored).
Zakaria is incredibly dynamic and energetic. He is a tenacious tackler and has the kind of physicality needed to succeed in the Premier League.
“He is an incredible box-to-box [player]. He has exceptional technique and grinds kilometres. All his characteristics were appreciated from a very young age, and he made his debut at the age of 18. He has offers from England, he has the right characteristics for the Premier. He will become a devastating player. Zakaria is a champion and has characteristics more or less similar to [Napoli midfielder Diego] Demme. Quantity, but a lot of quality.”
Zakaria is said to be available for around €27 million (£23 million) according to El Nacional. That seems like decent value. It must be said though, Moyes should be prioritising strengthening his squad in other areas.
If the Scot manages to sign a striker and a centre-back and then moves for Zakaria as well…well, that would be the dream.
