Opinion: West Ham would be absolutely crazy to spend £11.5 million on Gonzalo Montiel this month

According to a report from TyC sport, West Ham United may have to pay as much as €13 million (£11.6 million) if they want to sign River Plate ace Gonzalo Montiel this month.

The Hammers would be absolutely crazy to pay that kind of fee for the Argentine, however.

Firstly, the 24-year-old is out of contract with River Plate in the summer. So West Ham would be able to sign him for absolutely nothing in six months time.

Secondly, and this is the most important point, David Moyes should be prioritising the addition of a new striker this month.

If the Scot manages to bring a centre-forward to the London Stadium this month, he should then be eyeing up moves for a central midfielder and a left wing-back.

We may well need a new right-back in the summer if Ryan Fredericks is moved on.

But we are fairly well stocked in that particular department right now.

West Ham should consider Gonzalo Montiel in the summer

The 24-year-old Argentina international would be a great option for the Hammers in the summer.

The Argentinian is a tenacious right-back and his playing style is quintessentially South American.

Montiel seems to be ideally suited to the robust and intense nature of the Premier League. And he would provide stiff competition for Vladimir Coufal at the London Stadium.

The 24-year-old would be a great value addition on a free in the summer. We shouldn’t be paying such a hefty fee for him this month, however. There are more pressing matters at hand for David Moyes. That goes without saying.
