Opinion – Trouble ahead at West Ham with Graham Potter and David Sullivan clash incoming over striker transfer

West Ham United co-owner David Sullivan and Graham Potter could be on a collision course for trouble regarding one of our reported summer transfer targets.

Graham Potter arrived at the London Stadium in January to replace Julen Lopetegui, after the Spaniard oversaw a truly disastrous run of results in charge of West Ham.

David Sullivan made the call to appoint Lopetegui, ignoring advice from other members of the Hammers leadership in the process.

In fairness to Sullivan, he did atone for that error by sacking Lopetegui and replacing him with Potter. However, it must be said that he did hold onto him for far too long.

Now West Ham face another painful rebuild, with numerous new signings required in the summer.

Let’s hope that we take the correct approach to our player recruitment. I don’t want to see any of Sullivan’s old mates helping facilitate moves for us purely to benefit themselves.

Will Salthouse is well known to have an extremely close relationship with Hammers co-owner Sullivan.

The Unique Sports Group Chief Executive now has well over 300 players on his books, after a merger with German sports agency International Sports Management back in 2021.

With that in mind, it’s very interesting indeed to see the Hammers’ latest alleged transfer target…

Graham Potter and David Sullivan to clash over West Ham target

An alleged Hammers transfer target may well end up being a point of contention between Potter and Sullivan.

According to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook, Newcastle hitman Callum Wilson is firmly on the West Ham radar ahead of the summer.

The 32-year-old, who will be 33 in just two week’s time, will be a free agent at the end of the current campaign.

And guess who Callum Wilson is represented by?

You’ve guessed it, none other than Unique Sports.

This has David Sullivan’s fingerprints all over it, if the rumour is true of course.

I’m convinced that the injury-prone Wilson is not the kind of player Potter or his sidekick Macaulay would target.

Callum Wilson should be a no-go for West Ham

The Hammers should be going nowhere near the ageing, and incredibly injury prone striker this summer.

Any suggestion of signing him should be batted away instantly.

If West Ham are to move forward as a club, Potter and Macaulay need to be given the reigns and have total control over transfers.

If they make the wrong signings, then the buck will stop with them, and a serious chat will need to be had 12 months or so down the line.

Sure, Callum Wilson was a very good striker in his day, and I would have loved it if we would have signed him four or five years ago.

Those days are long gone now though, and the Hammers need to be looking at younger, more robust strikers with explosive pace.

Wilson has missed a truly staggering 677 days of action through injury since he moved to St James’ Park in the summer of 2020.

And there is no doubt in my mind that those injury problems will only become worse in the tail end of his career.

If West Ham sign Callum Wilson in the summer, it will obviously be a move instigated by David Sullivan, and that will undoubtedly cause friction between the Hammers co-owner and Graham Potter.
