West Ham are now eyeing a move to sign Sheffield United centre-back John Egan before tonight’s 11pm transfer window deadline.
That’s according to a report from the Sun who claim that the Hammers are preparing to bring the 29-year-old in as a replacement for Issa Diop who could be Newcastle bound.
Central defence is an area where West Ham boss David Moyes badly needs to strengthen before the January transfer window slams shut.
Angelo Ogbonna is out injured for the rest of the season whilst Kurt Zouma has only just returned to action.
And now it seems as though another name has been added to the list…
West Ham eyeing deadline day swoop for Sheffield United centre-back
Blades defender John Egan is a transfer target for the Hammers according to a report from the Sun.
A move for the 19-capped Republic of Ireland international will depend on moving Diop on to Newcastle first though.
Egan is a very solid central defender.
In 26 Championship appearances for Sheffield United so far this season, the 29-year-old has averaged 0.8 tackles, one interception and 4.2 clearances per game. He has also won 4.4 aerial duels per match during those outings (Who Scored).
The 29-year-old has made 62.1 passes on average per match and has recorded an impressive completion rate of 83.5% (Who Scored).
Egan is a very solid defender. He isn’t elite but he would be an upgrade on Issa Diop.
He is still under contract at Bramall Lane until 2024, so West Ham will have to make a decent offer in order to tempt the Blades into selling the Irishman.
With just 17 hours remaining until the transfer window closes, the Hammers owners had better get their act in order if they are to bring Egan to the London Stadium.
It must be said that there are better options out there for West Ham. However, if we are unable to secure deals for those players on deadline day, then Egan would be a decent backup option.
