Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham ‘fake news’: West Ham played a blinder in Man United boost

Talk of an impending move to North London for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes appears to have been premature; the battle between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United destined to rumble on into another week.

Depending on your perspective, this is either an irritation or a blessed relief.

West Ham and Jorge Mendes are desperate to extract maximum value out of the £85 million-rated dynamo. As things stand right now, Tottenham appear the only club willing to pay such a fee.

Future Champions League winner? How far can Mateus Fernandes really go?

Yet, it is no secret that Manchester United is Fernandes’ dream destination, as Hammers News reported a fortnight ago.

Were suggestions that Tottenham have reached a ‘verbal agreement’ with West Ham United for Mateus Fernandes merely briefs designed in order to smoke out the Red Devils? We can only speculate amid this most smoke and mirrors of transfer sagas.

Paul O’Keefe, one of the most respected Tottenham sources, has certainly heard nothing of an agreement between the two London neighbours.

“Player camp holds all the power. And that’s before you even try to negotiate with the club,” O’Keefe explained in an update on Saturday morning. “Spurs can’t dictate the timings. Doesn’t help that our fans are wound up by fake news of agreements etc.

“Nothing is advanced currently.”

West Ham look destined to earn double the £40 million fee they paid Southampton in August 2025. The interest of two extremely deep-pocketed Premier League clubs has made that a realistic possibility.

And Spurs’ clear desperation for transformative additions might yet force Man United – who initially valued Fernnades at around £60 million – to stray into realms they were keen to stay out of.

The Hammers may not get the ‘bidding war’ they wanted – neither Spurs or the Red Devils have made an official offer yet – but things are certainly going as they, and super-agent Mendes, planned.

“[West Ham] can dictate timings. They want multiple clubs involved,” adds O’Keefe. “West Ham made their position clear. They are happy to sell to highest bidder.”

The fixtures are out! How many points do West Ham NEED in the first 5 games?

Fernandes would pick Manchester United over Spurs

Of course, there is a chance that Tottenham opt against bidding at all.

If Fernandes decides that he wants Man United and Man United only – Benjamin Sesko did this when rejecting Newcastle’s advances in 2025 – then making a mega-money offer for a player who clearly doesn’t want to join would be the kind of desperation the UK hasn’t seen since they tried to make ‘Chico Time’ a thing.

If we were to guess at the conclusion to drawn-out saga, though, we suspect that Fernandes will end up joining Man United for somewhere around £80 million.

West Ham will get the sort of fee they want, they will avoid losing a fan favourite to Spurs, and Fernandes will land his dream transfer.

Win, win, and, erm, win.
