The Mail has made a big claim that Rob Newman has been sent abroad on a West Ham January transfer window mission.

Rob Newman remember him West Ham fans?

Well the Hammers’ so-called “head of recruitment” is still around despite speculation he could well be on his way following the arrival of Tim Steidten in the summer.

Especially after the German oversaw a massive upturn in West Ham’s transfer success rate following some dismal signings on Newman and David Moyes’ watch in recent years.

It was that poor performance in the transfer market which prompted the West Ham board to hire Steidten in the first place.

But some Hammers fans may be surprised to learn Newman is still playing an active role in the club’s recruitment.

That’s after The Mail made a big claim that Newman has been sent abroad on a West Ham transfer mission.

The Mail’s Transfer Confidential column claims West Ham look set for a busy end to the January transfer window.

And it is claimed Newman has been sent to AFCON to run the rule over the club’s targets.

“Head of recruitment” sent on transfer mission

“West Ham set for a busy window,” The Mail reports.

“West Ham admire Santiago Gimenez at Feyenoord but that is considered unrealistic for this month with his price tag around £35million.

“Interest in Sunderland’s Jack Clarke and Steven Bergwijn of Ajax has not progressed while head of recruitment Rob Newman is understood to be watching possible targets at the Africa Cup of Nations.”

That claim very much tallies with an exclusive Hammers News brought you from a key club insider back in November.

Newman’s African assignment

The senior source revealed the Hammers were tracking targets for January. But that some of them would be playing at AFCON.

The most notable target linked with a move to West Ham in January who is playing at AFCON is striker Serhou Guirassy. Newman won’t get to watch him in action for Guinea against Cameroon today, though.

Because, as revealed on Hammers News, the Stuttgart forward is injured.

It’s intriguing to hear Newman is still playing a very active and important role in the club’s recruitment.

And it seems to fly in the face of claims being made to the contrary by some sites previously.
