West Ham United missed out on the loan signing of Luka Jovic but his move to Frankfurt has turned out to be a double blow.
Serbia international striker Jovic reportedly snubbed a move to West Ham in favour of a return to Eintracht Frankfurt, according to Frankfurter Rundschau (as also reported by MSN.com and Sport Witness).
West Ham have been linked with Jovic since last January after he struggled to establish himself following a big money move to Real Madrid.
West Ham were pushing for Jovic loan
The Hammers were said to be keen to reunited Jovic with Sebastien Haller after the pair formed part of a deadly attacking line-up during their time together at Frankfurt.
West Ham then sold Haller to Ajax for £20m last Friday leaving David Moyes with just one senior striker.
Reports claimed Moyes was still interested, only to see Jovic return to Germany instead.
Now it appears that move has proved something of a double whammy for West Ham.
The east Londoners had also been linked with Real Madrid forward Mariano Diaz on loan (Daily Mail).
Jovic snub is double blow for Hammers with another Moyes target, Diaz, set for Real stay
The Daily Mail claimed earlier this week that West Ham were ‘exploring a deal’ for Diaz.
The 27-year-old has only made six appearances this season and The Daily Mail claimed he was open to a loan move.
“The former Lyon striker was discussed by West Brom last summer but would prefer a move to London and Moyes’ formation suits his style,” The Daily Mail reports.
But Jovic’s move has pushed Diaz up the pecking order at Madrid and he is now set to stay as back-up to Karim Benzema.
That’s according to respected Spanish outlet Marca.
Diaz was all set to leave Madrid claims Marca. But the departure of Borja Mayoral and now Jovic has changed all that.
Moyes in for Dia and other mystery strikers?
Marca claims West Ham target Diaz will now be kept by Zinedine Zidane as ‘untouchable’ Benzema’s back-up.
It is more by default as he is now the club’s only other recognised striker.
That may change in the summer but for now it rules another name out of the running for Moyes.
West Ham are however in discussions with Reims over the signing of Boulaye Dia (first reported by Le 10 Sport).
And West Ham insider ExWHUemployee last night claimed the club are also in talks over other – as yet – unnamed forwards.
