Legendary striker Luis Suarez looks set to kill West Ham’s hopes over one striker but could revive another in a summer transfer triangle.
West Ham have been heavily linked with a move to sign Suarez’s fellow Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez from Benfica.
The Hammers saw a late bid for the brilliant forward knocked back by Benfica in the January window.
West Ham have been tipped to try again in the summer. But since then Nunez’s star has risen further still and he looks set to be coveted by some of the top clubs across Europe.
West Ham have also been linked with Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins with reports David Moyes will try to sign him in a £50m deal this summer.
Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard looked to pour cold water on West Ham’s hopes of signing Watkins at the weekend (The Sun).
But there could yet be a twist in the situation after developments overnight.
Because reported Aston Villa target Luis Suarez looks to have killed West Ham hopes over one striker but could revive another in a transfer triangle.
While Mark Noble was saying goodbye to West Ham fans after the 2-2 draw with Man City, Suarez waved his own tearful goodbye to Atletico Madrid.
The 35-year-old striker is leaving having helped fire Atletico to the title last season and back into the Champions League again this term.
Reports from the likes of Football London recently claimed Atletico will replace Suarez with his fellow Uruguayan Nunez this summer.
That claim was made again on Monday morning.
And reports overnight claim Gerrard looks set to lure Suarez back to the Premier League with Aston Villa.
The likes of The Birmingham Mail claim Gerrard wants to reunite Suarez with former Liverpool teammates Danny Ings and Philippe Coutinho at Villa Park.
That in turn surely raises question marks over the future of West Ham target Watkins.
Should Villa sign Suarez on a free they would struggle to keep all those attackers happy with no European football to rotate their squad.
So Moyes, who can offer European football at West Ham once again, would be encouraged over his prospects of signing Watkins – who has faced criticism from some Villa fans over his finishing.
It is a potentially intriguing transfer triangle indeed.
