Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has sprung a transfer surprise on Man United and West Ham as sudden Cody Gakpo news emerges overnight.
But Foot Mercato recently claimed that Manchester United were the leading challengers for the alleged West Ham target’s signature as speculation intensifies around the PSV and Holland star.
West Ham and Liverpool have shared a few column inches when it comes to transfers over the last year.
It was well publicised in January that West Ham were pushing hard to sign Darwin Nunez (Sky Sports). The move did not happen and and Liverpool pounced to sign Nunez in the summer.

It was the second West Ham move Klopp had hijacked after Liverpool snatched Luis Diaz from under Moyes’ nose in January with the Scot believing he had the Colombian all but signed.
Well now the big German boss has done it again and Man United will know how it feels with Erik ten Hag having believed he was in pole position to land West Ham-linked Gakpo.
Liverpool boss Klopp sprung a transfer surprise on Man United and West Ham as sudden Gakpo news emerged overnight.
Because somewhat out of the blue it was announced last night that Liverpool have swooped to sign the 23-year-old ahead of Man United, Southampton and West Ham (Sky Sports).
Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign Gakpo for a fee between £35m and £45m from PSV, the Dutch club announced.
A PSV statement on Monday said: “PSV and LFC have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo.
“The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently, where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the completion of the transfer.”

Moyes has made a surprising statement on January transfers, saying West Ham will not be active unless they suffer injuries.
That’s despite the team continuing their woeful season with a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal when the Premier League resumed on Boxing Day evening.
Man United were reportedly looking to replace Cristiano Ronaldo with Gakpo. So his capture is a huge slap around the face from their bitter rivals Liverpool.
Realistically with the likes of Man United and Liverpool involved it was always going to be wishful thinking that West Ham – or the likes of Southampton and Leeds who were also linked – would have any chance of signing a talent like Gakpo.
