How much West Ham would owe Southampton if Mateus Fernandes is sold this summer

Mateus Fernandes has been tipped to leave West Ham this summer rather than play in the Championship next season.

Fernandes was probably one of the 10 best central midfielders in the Premier League despite the Hammers’ relegation.

He has suffered back-to-back relegations, having joined from Southampton, but his stock is at an all-time high.

Fernandes has been linked with several top European clubs, which could mean West Ham are in line for a huge sale.

Unfortunately, the East London club will immediately lose a percentage of the fee to Southampton due to a sell-on clause.

What do you make of the ‘Mateus Fernandes to Real Madrid’ rumours? 🇵🇹 👑

He's good – but is he THAT good?

Mateus Fernandes of West Ham United celebrates scoring his team's third goal during the Premier League match between West Ham United and Sunderland at London Stadium on January 24, 2026 in London, England.

Southampton in line for windfall if West Ham sell Mateus Fernandes

Manchester United, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are all reportedly interested in signing Mateus Fernandes.

The 21-year-old is already a quality midfielder, but many believe he will soon develop into one of the world’s best.

West Ham have set an asking price of £80 million to part ways with Fernandes ahead of the 2026/27 Championship campaign.

This would be the second-highest transfer sale in the Hammers’ history, behind Declan Rice to Arsenal (£105m).

The only negative would be that the Saints included a 15% sell-on clause in the Fernandes deal, according to The Athletic.

But Hammers News understands that this only applies to the profit West Ham make on the sale.

Which Premier League youngster would you most like to see West Ham sign on loan? ⚒️👇

Fernandes joined West Ham for £42m last summer, which means an £80m sale would result in a £38m profit in just 12 months.

Southampton would then be due a handsome £5.7m (15% profit) from the deal, leaving the Hammers with £74.3m.

Meanwhile, if West Ham were only able to sell Fernandes for £60m, Southampton would still receive £4.2m.

Either way, both the Hammers and the Saints will be hoping for a bidding war between some of Europe’s elite clubs.

That is one reason why it is a shame Fernandes will not be putting himself in the shop window at the World Cup this summer.
