According to French media outlet Foot Mercato, Marseille ace Duje Caleta-Car is a shadow of his former self, with the centre-back’s value plummeting by the day. And this could be good or bad news for West Ham, depending on what way you look at it.

L’Equipe reported a few days before transfer deadline day that West Ham had made numerous bids for the eight-capped Croatian international.

The Sun also claimed that the Hammers made a £25 million offer for Caleta-Car two days before the transfer window closed.

And then L’Equipe (page 11, November 5th) claimed yesterday that Marseille practically offered the 24-year-old to West Ham on a plate.

David Moyes missed out on one of his key targets, however. The player himself was keen to stay in France in order to play Champions League football.

But with Marseille struggling in Europe’s premier competition, a move to the London Stadium may well be back on the cards next summer.

Moyes could go back in for the centre-back

Buzz Sport claims that the Ligue 1 outfit are prepared to sell the 6ft 4in centre-back for £20 million at the end of this season.

According to Foot Mercato, however, Caleta-Car’s value is plummeting by the day, as he continues to look like shadow of the player who impressed so greatly last season.

Now, this could be great news for West Ham in the sense that we may be able to pick him up for a bargain fee either in January or next summer.

At the same time, however, it could be taken as terrible news for the Hammers. Caleta-Car might never recover from his poor start to the season. The 24-year-old’s confidence may well be at rock bottom. And sometimes it is incredibly hard to recover from that.

It’s an answer that we will not get unless we actually sign the Croatia international.

It would be foolish to write off a player because of a rough patch of form. But Foot Mercato’s report is particularly scathing. And only time will tell as to whether Caleta-Car’s current dip in form ends up being beneficial to West Ham or not.
