West Ham United are reportedly ready to make a formal offer for Lyon midfielder Thiago Mendes ahead of the summer transfer window.
That’s according to a report from Yahoo blogger and football journalist Jorge Nicola who claims that the Hammers are lining up a concrete offer for the 30-year-old Brazilian ace.
Central midfield is definitely an area at the London Stadium where West Ham boss David Moyes will want to strengthen in the summer transfer window.
Mark Noble is set to retire whilst Alex Kral will almost certainly be sent back to Spartak Moscow after his underwhelming loan spell with the Hammers.
Tomas Soucek’s future at West Ham is also far from certain, as covered right here on Hammers News. It seems as though Moyes has a plan in place to bolster his engine room ranks, however…
West Ham offer for Thiago Mendes in the pipeline
According to Yahoo blogger and football journalist Jorge Nicola, the Hammers are ready to submit a bid for the Brazilian deep-lying playmaker.
Mendes joined Lyon from Lille in the summer of 2019 for around £20 million (Transfermarkt). He now has just 12 months remaining on his current deal with the Ligue 1 outfit though. So perhaps West Ham could pick him up for a bargain fee in the summer.
The Brazilian, 30, is a very decent footballer.
In 27 Ligue 1 outings for Lyon this season, Mendes has averaged 1.3 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 1.9 clearances per match (Who Scored).
He has made 53.7 passes on average per game and has recorded an impressive completion rate of 88.9% (Who Scored).
Mendes has been described as a ‘brilliant player’ by Soccer Souls.
It must be said though, at 30, Mendes doesn’t seem to be a typical David Moyes signing. The Scot has repeatedly insisted that he wants to bring young, hungry and physically robust players to the London Stadium this summer.
The Lyon ace certainly doesn’t fit into that category.
And we would be very surprised if West Ham actually do make an offer for Mendes before the start of next season.
