Five quality players West Ham could still sign for free after David Gold comment, including two pre-deadline targets

The window may be shut but there are some impressive free transfers still available to West Ham United.

The Hammers appointed Manuel Pellegrini and backed him with £100 million on 10 new signings over the summer.

But on the pitch the club has struggled in the opening two games.

Some pundits and supporters are already questioning the transfer business.

And many feel West Ham did not sufficiently strengthen the centre of midfield in particular.

It is still early days but should Pellegrini wish to bring in free agents he will be able to according to co-owner David Gold – Read more here.

West Ham have a habit of bringing in out of contract players over the years.

From Diego Tristan to Nene and Patrice Evra they rarely work out.

And whether Pellegrini would want any current out of contract players remains to be seen.

But there are a number of potential bargain signings available should the Chilean deem it necessary, including two of his reported pre-deadline targets and two of his former players.

At 32, Marchisio is probably the most attractive free agent out there right now. Juventus have released the midfielder who is sure to have plenty of clubs looking at him. The Italian international played over 300 times of Juve scoring 33 goals and would add class to the Hammers midfield if they can tempt him to London.

Yaya Toure

Yaya Toure has been linked with a move to West Ham for a while now. That only intensified after Pellegrini’s appointment given they worked together at Manchester City. Pellegrini denied he would bring in his former captain last week (Sky Sports) but could West Ham’s dismal displays so far change his thinking.

Samir Nasri

After a six-month ban from football in February (Telegraph) Samir Nasri, another of Pellegrini’s former players at Manchester City, is available on a free at the end of the month. At just 31 could he offer something different to West Ham now the window is closed? One big bonus, like Toure, is that he already knows the Premier League after spells with Arsenal and City.

According to reports Pellegrini wanted Ben Arfa before the deadline shut but he was holding out for a move to Lyon.

That failed to materialise for the former Newcastle United and PSG midfielder. So he is available on a free should West Ham still be willing to give him another chance in the Premier League.

Diego Reyes

At 25 and a fully fledged Mexican international Diego Reyes is certain to have plenty of suitors. He was another reported Pellegrini target (Sky Sports) but is yet to commit to a club. West Ham have not looked convincing at the back so far and the presence of international teammate Javier Hernandez could help should the Hammers move for the former Porto centre back.
