Everton have beaten West Ham to a second David Moyes target in a week as Frank Lampard closes in on Conor Coady.

In just over 24 hours during the last week, West Ham’s move for the powerhouse was on and off four times after the Hammers had a fourth bid – worth around £33m – accepted by Lille.

When West Ham’s bid for Onana was accepted having been chased by Moyes all summer, it looked inevitable he would join ex Everton boss Moyes at the Hammers.

But instead he is joining ex Hammer Lampard at the Toffees.

Everton hijacked the move with a bigger salary on offer.

There was a twist when a West Ham insider claimed the Hammers were confident of beating the Toffees to Onana after changing their stance on what they were willing to pay the 20-year-old (Claret and Hugh).

Within hours, though, the same site reported a complete U-turn as Moyes pulled the plug on the move, clearing the path for Everton to press ahead with his signing.

Onana was spotted in the crowd watching Everton’s opening weekend defeat to Chelsea.

Now Everton are set to beat West Ham to a second Moyes target in a week as Lampard closes in on Coady.

As reported on Saturday by Hammers News, Coady was benched by Wolves with speculation swirling over interest from the likes of West Ham.

But Everton have pounced for the Liverpool-supporting defender.

And the likes of Sky Sports claim Everton ‘expect to beat West Ham to the signing of Coady’.

It comes with both West Ham and Everton in dire need of defensive reinforcements.

West Ham had just one senior central defender in their squad for the defeat to Man City. New £30m signing Nayef Aguerd is out for 10 weeks and Angelo Ogbonna is another month away from a potential return from the ACL injury he suffered last November.

Craig Dawson has a thigh strain and Moyes revealed on Sunday that Issa Diop was refusing to play having demanded a move away.

Everton meanwhile lost Ben Godfrey and Yerry Mina to injuries in their defeat to Chelsea.

“Everton are closing in on the signing of Wolves defender Conor Coady,” Sky Sports report.

“The 29-year-old is expected to join on an initial loan deal with an option to buy.

“The deal could happen before Everton’s next game against Aston Villa on Saturday…

“Everton have beaten West Ham to his signature, with Coady wanting to end his seven-year spell at Molineux for a guarantee of first-team football ahead of the Qatar World Cup, and a potential England call-up.”

West Ham have also been linked with a move for Fenerbahce and Hungary centre-back Attila Szalai.
