There was a time recently when Liverpool were one of the clubs being heavily linked with West Ham captain Declan Rice.
Failure to make the Champions League – playing in which is a prerequisite for Rice when it comes to deciding who he joins this summer – put paid to any hopes Liverpool may have had of getting the beloved skipper from the Hammers.
But that could prove to be bad news for West Ham in a different way as Liverpool look elsewhere in their midfield makeover.

The Hammers are set to bank around £100m for Rice. And widespread reports claim Moyes is preparing to spend it on some top quality players.

One of whom is relegated Southampton captain Ward-Prowse.
Both West Ham and Liverpool need to overhaul their midfields this summer. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has said goodbye to James Milner and brought in Alexis Mac Allister.
Moyes is also set to let Manuel Lanzini leave. And West Ham owner David Sullivan said that Rice will need to be replaced by several players, so unique is his talent.
Journalist Matt Law reported at the weekend that set-piece specialist Ward-Prowse was a key target for West Ham.
Liverpool JWP interest could explain West Ham links to other targets
While Ward-Prowse is a quality player, many feel his ceiling would be a club like West Ham and that he is not on the radar of any of the truly top clubs.
Enter Liverpool.
The Daily Mail claim the Merseysiders want to sign Ward-Prowse from Southampton this summer. And worse still Liverpool are reportedly willing to go as high as £50m for the man West Ham were hoping to get for £30-40m.
Liverpool’s interest is serious judging by how widely the Ward-Prowse news is being reported overnight.
That could explain why West Ham have been heavily linked with Joao Palhinha, Edson Alvarez and Harvey Barnes in the last few days.
The Hammers may have stood a chance if they could offer Ward-Prowse guaranteed game time over a club like Liverpool.
But the fact is he will get that at Anfield too given the midfield rebuild Klopp is undertaking there.
