David Moyes says failed moves for new Liverpool stars Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz show the transfer reality West Ham face.

West Ham did not sign any players in the January window when the world and its wife were crying out for the club to sign a striker.

Even Moyes’ sole senior forward Michail Antonio admitted he wanted West Ham to sign someone he could share the goalscoring burden with.

That’s not to say West Ham did not try.

It was well publicised late in the window that West Ham were trying hard to sign Benfica’s Darwin Nunez (Sky Sports).

The move did not happen and when the window closed transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano said West Ham had shot themselves in the foot by alerting their rivals to Nunez’s talent and potential availability ahead of the summer window.

And that’s precisely what happened as Liverpool hijacked West Ham’s interest to sign Nunez this summer.

Liverpool’s Nunez move also came after Jurgen Klopp hijacked West Ham’s bid for Luis Diaz in January with Moyes believing he had the Colombian all but signed for the Hammers (Daily Mail).

Klopp admitted he wanted to sign Diaz this summer but had to expedite those plans amid West Ham’s interest. Lo and behold the attacker has also been a revelation.

Raphinha of Leeds and now Barcelona was another forward player Moyes tried to sign in January.

Moyes continues to bide his time as he goes in search of a better quality of player to help West Ham continue to challenge for the top six.

But he remains philosophical about missing out on players like Nunez and Diaz to clubs like Liverpool.

Speaking to Graham Hunter, the Hammer boss did not mention Nunez or Diaz by name out of respect. But it was obvious the Scot was referring to the new Liverpool sensations given they were the only forwards West Ham had come remotely close to doing deals for back in January.

And Moyes says the failed moves for new Liverpool stars Nunez and Diaz shows the transfer reality West Ham face.

Because West Ham still have a way to go to convince some top players to join them.

“We had Micky Antonio who started the season on fire and round about mid to end of November his goals dried up, which can happen with centre forwards, and he didn’t really get many goals back until April,” Moyes told Graham Hunter.

“So we needed the goalscorer in that period of the season when we weren’t quite (getting the goals).

“And what we were doing we were in the quarter-final of the Europa League and then the semi-final and trying to get to get through and it was taking its toll a little bit Thursday to Sunday.

“I wouldn’t name them, but the strikers we attempted to buy in January and went huge money for, we couldn’t get.

“But that’s partly because maybe we’re not ready to get those players. Not us personally, but players are still looking at us saying ‘Let’s see how you do before I come and join you at West Ham’.

“So that’s why I’m saying we’ve still got a level to go, in my eyes at least, but we’ve got to keep trying to build on the players we’ve got.”

Moyes has of course now managed to bring in a top young striker in the shape of £35m Gianluca Scamacca, ending an 18-month search.

But his comments show the reality the Hammers are faced with when going out in the market trying to sign top talent.
