David Moyes spoke to reporters yesterday and responded when asked if he was angered by comments made by Stuart Pearce regarding Jesse Lingard and Manchester United.

The Hammers first-team coach recently spoke to talkSPORT and reiterated the club’s desire to re-sign Jesse:

“The ball is in Manchester United’s court. He is contracted to them. We would like him with us, there is no doubt about that. He’s a special lad and was very good around the players – the players really like him. His ability shone out last year and gave us a great option in our squad. You never know, but at this moment in time it looks like he is fighting for a place in the United line-up.”

Those comments were in stark contrast to Moyes’s approach to questions about Lingard.

The Scot has always played it down and refused to talk about the 28-year-old potentially arriving at the London Stadium.

Obviously we would all love Lingard to come back. As things stand, however, it seems like there is every chance he could end up staying at Old Trafford.

The West Ham boss spoke to Football.London yesterday and responded when asked whether Pearce’s Lingard remarks annoyed him:

“No, Pearcey is a great spokesman don’t worry about that, Pearcey knows what he’s doing. Of course, we really enjoyed having Jesse [Lingard] but Jesse is a Manchester United player and the questions are not for me but are for Manchester United. We enjoyed having him and if the opportunity arose for us to get Jesse then we would have an interest but in my mind, he is at Manchester United and it is not for us to discuss.”

Perhaps Moyes is playing it down again because the onus surely is on us to make the first move, not Manchester United.

If the Hammers boss wants to sign Jesse, a bid needs to be submitted for him, there is no use in just waiting around for something to happen at Old Trafford.

Hopefully he is playing it cool and there is work going on behind the scenes. Lingard will undoubtedly make us stronger this season. Much will depend on how much he pushes for a move to the London Stadium, however.
