Comments from striker Borja Iglesias could pave the way for West Ham to beat Valencia to Maxi Gomez

West Ham United have been chasing Maxi Gomez since January and face competition from Valencia.

But is the saga about to take a twist in West Ham’s favour?

Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini has been chasing the Celta Vigo and Uruguay forward all summer.

And West Ham are determined to bring the player to East London.

Pellegrini focused on landing Gomez

Recent reports claimed Gomez wanted to stay in Spain and move to Valencia, who are said to be rivalling West Ham in the bid to sign the 22-year-old.

West Ham received a big boost when the Spanish press reported that Valencia could switch their attentions to Espanyol striker Borja Iglesias instead of Gomez (Marca).

The Marca report claimed Valencia are growing increasingly fed up because negotiations for Gomez have become protracted.

And now West Ham have been given another potential boost after the Iglesias spoke out suggesting he wants to move.

Iglesias could hold the key for West Ham

The 26-year-old ironically joined Espanyol from Celta Vigo last summer after losing his place to Gomez.

He scored 20 goals in 43 appearances in his debut season. And now he has suggested to La Voz de Galicia he is open to the move.

“One of the things that I have never doubted is that when make a decision that it was the right one and the one I wanted,” Iglesias told La Voz de Galicia.

“My next destination? The decision is not only mine but that of my family, my friends and, above all, my agents, who know about this – they have a lot to do.”

Stars aligning for Hammers and Gomez?

There are a number of factors here playing into Pellegrini’s hands.

Valencia switching their interest from Gomez to Iglesias.

Iglesias’s ambition to leave.

And the fact his release clause of £25million is £20m less than that of Gomez.

It all points to a move being very much on the cards.

And that would surely clear the path for West Ham to try and conclude a deal for Gomez.

Meanwhile, repeated suggestions West Ham have agreed a £29m deal with Celta Vigo have been played down by Hammers insider ExWHUemployee, read the full story here.
