Big last West Ham hope of beating Newcastle to Alphonse Areola is something money can't buy

The big last West Ham hope of beating Newcastle to the signing of Alphonse Areola is something money can’t buy.

As reported on Hammers News last night, Newcastle have swooped late to try and beat West Ham to the signing of Areola.

There has been increased speculation that West Ham will complete the signing of Areola after his impressive loan spell at the London Stadium last season.

But interest from newly minted Newcastle United has loomed large over proceedings of late.

A few days ago The Daily Mail claimed Newcastle entering the race for Areola had stalled discussions between West Ham and the Frenchman.

Moyes used Areola as his number two/cup goalkeeper behind the ageing Lukasz Fabianski last season.

And that has sparked fears Areola may choose Newcastle over West Ham if he is given assurances that he will be number one at St James’s Park.

The Newcastle interest has been more than a distraction for West Ham fans anxious to see the giant World Cup winner come to east London permanently from PSG.

Worryingly, RMC Sport in France was reporting as breaking news last night that Newcastle have initiated proceedings to sign France goalkeeper Areola.

The report suggested West Ham still have first option on Areola – as confirmed by West Ham when he joined on loan last summer – until the end of June.

But that means very little if the Magpies let it be known to PSG and Areola’s representatives that they are willing to beat what West Ham are offering financially on top of being number one.

The player could quite easily reject the Hammers in favour of a move Newcastle from July 1st onwards.

But the big last West Ham hope of beating Newcastle to Areola is something money can’t buy.

When West Ham were vying to sign Areola last summer there was stiff competition from elsewhere after he was named Fulham’s player of the season despite their relegation.

West Ham won the race because – as widely reported at the time by the likes of L’Equipe (as reported on Inside Futbol), The Evening Standard and TBR – his family home is in London, where they intend to stay.

Areola owns a house in London and his family enjoy being in the capital, with it reported they have been well settled in the city since 2020 (The Mirror).

“Him and his family are very settled in London, they’ve had a house here since before he moved to Fulham so it’d be a move that would suit everyone you think,” The Evening Standard’s Jack Rosser said last summer.

Areola’s priority last summer was not only to find a club in the Premier League but one in London and that was a massive factor in him joining the Hammers in the first place.

Living in London is something money can’t buy for Newcastle.

And it looks to be West Ham’s big last hope of beating Eddie Howe’s mega rich Magpies to the Frenchman’s signature this summer.
