West Ham United face a battle with Arsenal for one of our top targets in the summer transfer window.

Both West Ham and Arsenal will be heavily active in the summer window, with Graham Potter and Mikel Arteta keen to bolster their ranks at the London Stadium and the Emirates respectively.

The Hammers squad is an incredibly unbalanced one and it requires serious attention. The same could be said for the Gunners squad in truth.

Potter is said to be planning big changes amongst his playing staff when the summer window opens.

And the main priority for him will be to sign a clinical striker with real pace and power.

The Hammers head coach has helped improve numerous players at West Ham already, including the likes of Alphonse Areola.

However, that won’t be enough on its own to take us to the next level.

The Hammers need to make some big statement signings this summer.

The good news is that Potter seems to be intent on making that happen, but the bad news is that Arsenal are lining up a move for one of his key transfer targets.

Arsenal to make formal offer for West Ham target Jonathan David

The two London rivals are set to go head-to-head for a truly elite centre-forward.

Sky Sports out in Switzerland claim that Jonathan David is West Ham’s top priority transfer target this summer.

However, Arsenal want to sign the 25-year-old striker as well, with a total package worth around £17 million required in wages and agent fees to get a deal for the Canadian done.

The Hammers have been strongly linked with a move to sign David recently, so Arsenal’s interest in obtaining his signature is far from ideal.

The Lille striker is absolutely electric.

He possesses blistering pace, has terrific movement and is an elite finisher when presented with a goalscoring opportunity.

David has bagged an impressive 21 goals and nine assists in 37 games for Lille so far this season (Transfermarkt).

The Hammers owners need to pull out all the stops to get a deal done for the Canada international in the summer, but it will be incredibly hard to do that if Arsenal really are in for him.

How double deal for two free agents could earn West Ham £100m

If the Hammers manage to sign Jonathan David and his Lille teammate Angel Gomes, we could be on to a real winner.

The striker and midfielder are both elite performers and if they produce the goods for West Ham, they would easily be worth £100 million between them within a couple of years.

The two areas where Potter needs to strengthen most at the London Stadium are the centre-forward and central midfield departments.

Signing David and Gomes for absolutely nothing would represent truly sensational business for the Hammers.

However, to secure the latter’s signature, it seems like West Ham will have to beat Arsenal to get a deal done.
