‘You’re kidding yourself’: David Moyes takes sly dig at West Ham fans that proves total lack of ambition

West Ham United manager David Moyes has suggested that he never thought he’d bring six or seven years of sustained success to the London Stadium.

Moyes sat down for a wide-ranging interview on Michael Calvin’s Football People podcast, and discussed all things West Ham.

The Hammers have failed to kick on this season, after consecutive top-seven finishes, and we are currently embroiled in a real relegation battle.

West Ham are sitting in 16th spot in the Premier League table, just two points clear of the relegation zone.

Moyes has struggled to get the best out of his new signings this season and has frustratingly been really resistant to change.

The thing is, the Scot has always struggled when he reaches a point in management where he is expected to bring in success to a club. During his time with Everton, he qualified for the Champions League but exited the competition in the qualification round. He then went on to guide his side to a 11th place finish in the Premier League.

And then comes his time with Manchester United. He failed miserably, whatever way you look at it, and was sacked during his first season in charge at Old Trafford.

After two very good seasons with West Ham, a similar pattern has emerged, whereby he seems to struggle with the spotlight shining squarely on him…

David Moyes makes arrogant comments about West Ham

The Hammers fans can never be accused off being spoilt. We haven’t won a major trophy since 1980! And we’re well within our rights to demand more from the manager and his players.

However, Moyes told Michael Calvin’s Football People podcast how anyone with ‘real football intelligence’ wouldn’t expect continued success for West Ham:

“I think to myself, West Ham have had three brilliant seasons. We avoided relegation, we took them into Europe the next year, we get to the semi-final of a European competition, we finish seventh the second year. So the perspective has made me say yeah, you know, if you’re gonna come to West Ham and expect to do six, seven years where you’re competing at the top, I think you’re probably kidding yourself on and I think anyone with any real football intelligence will probably go along with that.”

Any real football intelligence? I would suggest that the best time to really kick on and improve is after two relatively successful campaigns. Instead, Moyes has clearly taken his foot off the gas, has allowed complacency to creep in amongst the players and has accepted mediocrity during games and training sessions.

What Moyes is failing to grasp here is the fact that he was backed to the hilt in the summer transfer market.

The Scot spent £180 million on eight new players, and West Ham were ready to really kick on.

Unfortunately for us, Moyes is a manager who has absolutely no history of success in the game and he has never won a trophy throughout his quarter of a century in football management. It’s little wonder why with his mentality. How can a football manager come out and say he doesn’t expect constant success when you’ve managed a team to back-to-back top seven finishes?

The lack of ambition to succeed is frightening.

He has failed miserably this season. That’s all there is to it. The 59-year-old hasn’t even made an attempt to evolve his tactics and has been found out. Moyes has also struggled to get the best out of the technically gifted summer signings.

Let’s be frank, he never has throughout his career has he? These constant messages to the Hammers fans suggesting that we should think ourselves lucky for two good seasons are incredibly patronising and reek of self entitlement.

He’s a very arrogant man and it’s beginning to feel like he thinks he’s bulletproof. If I was David Moyes, I would start focusing on winning football matches instead of appearing on podcasts.

The sneaky, back-handed digs at fans who are praying for some success is unacceptable in my opinion. Moyes knows exactly what he’s doing and he would be better served in trying to fix the problems that he has caused.
