Let’s start this by saying any team can have a bad day at the office – and West Ham certainly had one in the 4-1 defeat at Villa Park.
The Hammers were undone in the same ruthless style they themselves have shown in wins over the likes of Chelsea and Brighton.
So West Ham fans should not get too down on the manager of the team after what has been, on the whole, a fine start to the season.

The problem is whenever David Moyes adopts what could be seen as a risk averse approach and tactics and it doesn’t come off, it gives those who have been calling for a more progressive manager ammunition.
There is a feeling Moyes showed Villa, a decent team who are evenly matched with West Ham, far too much respect.
The performance and result was West Ham’s worst since the dark days of last season.
And Hammers supporting journalist Dan Silver believes tactics are the problem.

“A couple of lively spells in either half aside, West Ham largely unwatchable today,” Silver said on X.

“Villa have been miles better. Genuinely amazing what Emery has done with that team in a year.”
Silver makes some salient points. And his comments will strike a chord with many Hammers fans.
Villa’s high line was there for the taking yesterday. And West Ham should have been the perfect team to exploit it.
But Moyes persisted with Michail Antonio up front and it simply played into the hands of the hosts.
A frustrating day all round but hopefully a one-off ahead of a packed schedule.
