‘What are the board waiting for?’ – Former West Ham player makes it clear who should replace Julen Lopetegui

It’s quite obvious that Julen Lopetegui was the wrong appointment from the start at West Ham United.

58-year-old Julen Lopetegui is a well-known pragmatist, so he was never going to be a good fit at West Ham was he.

It has been claimed that Lopetegui could be sacked if we lose heavily to Manchester City on Saturday but in truth, he should have been moved on from the London Stadium a long time ago.

The vast majority of the summer signings made by Lopetegui and Steidten have failed to live up to expectations thus far.

The buck stops with the Hammers head coach though. He has been unable to get a tune out of those players on the pitch, and he needs to be held accountable now for his horrendous performance.

When the Hammers moved David Moyes on, we were crying out for an innovative and fresh thinking young coach.

However, as per usual, the West Ham board took the cheap option.

As has proven to be the case time and time again, that short-term cheap option ends up costing us dearly.

Former West Ham player names Julen Lopetegui replacement

It’s no secret that Lopetegui has become a hugely unpopular figure at the London Stadium.

The football he has implemented has been dire to say the least, and the harsh truth is that our points return flatters us.

It’s clear for everyone to see that a change is needed in the managerial department.

If that doesn’t happen, the Hammers’ 2024/25 campaign will be destined to be a complete non-entity.

The pressure is cranking up on Lopetegui, and former Hammers striker Tony Cottee hasn’t pulled any punches when it comes to what the board’s next move should be.

Cottee took to his X account, and ripped into the West Ham board regarding their inaction concerning Lopetegui.

Cottee has hit the nail on the head here.

If if West Ham don’t make a change and sack Julen Lopetegui, we will be in for a long, very painful and unrewarding season.

The answer to the Hammers’ current problems is obvious. Lopetegui has to be moved on, and a younger coach with more modern and innovative ideas needs to replace him.

Graham Potter is the ideal candidate for the job in my eyes.

Whether or not the Hammers board will be prepared to pull the trigger imminently remains to be seen though.
