West Ham United’s net spend in the Premier League era has come to light after a reporter with close links to David Sullivan provided some very interesting numbers indeed.
David Moyes has spent some serious cash since his return to West Ham, having brought the likes of Lucas Paqueta, Mohammed Kudus, Edson Alvarez, Gianluca Scamacca, Kurt Zouma, James Ward-Prowse and Nayef Aguerd to the club for huge fees.
It would be reasonable to assume that West Ham United’s net spend has been fairly extortionate in the Premier League era, especially considering the fact that after Declan Rice, Dimitri Payet remains the Hammers‘ second most expensive sale of all-time at just £25 million (Transfermarkt).
Football is a real money game nowadays, and it’s impossible to sign a decent player for anything less than £30 million or so.
Long gone are the days when you can pick up an exciting young talent for a few a million.
The landscape in football has changed massively but even so, our net spend is remarkable if you ask me…

Sean Whetstone – a reporter with close links to Hammers co-owner David Sullivan, has broken down our expenditure since the Premier League was formed.
Since the summer of 1992, West Ham have spent just over a billion on 661 players, and have sold £542 million of talent.
661 new players seems like a lot to me – that’s over 20 players a season, so the figure must include new arrivals into our academy as well.
That leaves our net spend at £468 million over the past 31 years. So that’s just over £15 million spent every season on new players. Wow, not much at all really is it.
You’d think we would have spent so much more than that, but I guess it wasn’t until the last decade when finances in football really have exploded.
Either way, West Ham United’s net spend over the past 31 years was still hugely surprising to me.
