The West Ham United players will have to be prepared for a red-hot atmosphere out in Greece on Thursday for our Europa League clash with Olympiacos, after a firework struck a player in the big Greek derby yesterday.

The Europa League clash between West Ham and Olympiacos this week is a highly anticipated one, and a win for the Hammers could almost see us pretty much guarantee qualification from Group A.

There were fears that the West Ham fans would be banned from travelling to the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium by UEFA, but our one-game away fans suspension was handed out for the match out in Freiburg instead.

David Moyes will be keen for his side to get the win, but the fans travelling out there might just be wishing that they’d been banned for the game in Greece rather than Germany!

As Panathinaikos player Juankar warmed up on the touchline, he was struck by a firework fired from the home fans, and the game was subsequently abandoned.

Security will have to be air tight on Thursday night, and the West Ham players, as well as the fans, will be fully aware that they will be heading in through the gates of hell for the Europa League game.

The Hammers have played at plenty of intimidating away venues, but Olympiacos might just take the biscuit as the worst of the lot.

That theory was backed up yesterday during the so-called ‘maddest’ derby in European football (The Sun).

The West Ham players can be forgiven for dreading the Olympiacos Europa League clash, after the firework incident led to the Greek side’s game being abandoned yesterday afternoon.

Let’s just keep our fingers crossed that the Europa League clash passes without incident and that there are no repeats of what we saw yesterday at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium.
