West Ham sold Javier Hernandez to Sevilla in the summer of 2019 for around $9.9 million (£7.3 million) according to Reuters. Will the Hammers be rueing that decision now, however?

The Mexican never really produced the goods at the London Stadium.

Had we kept Javier Hernandez, however, there is a real argument that he would have been able to strike up a formidable partnership with Sebastien Haller.

Haller arrived at West Ham when Chicharito was moved on. So we never got to see the duo in action together.

The Ivory Coast international has really struggled during his time with the Hammers. In truth, we have never really played to his strengths, however.

And a little and large partnership involving Haller and Hernandez could very well have yielded great results.

The Mexico international is a tireless runner and a real nuisance for opposing defenders. He chases down lost causes and harasses the opposition until he is blue in the face.

Haller, meanwhile, is more of a target man. Hernandez would have thrived off of the Ivorian’s flick ons, whilst the 26-year-old would have benefitted from the Mexican dragging defenders out of position with his intelligent running.

It is a shame that we never got to see the two players on the pitch together.

The Hammers owners will of course say that they had to raise funds to bring Haller to the London Stadium. And getting Hernandez’s huge salary off the books was obviously key to the 6ft 3in target man’s arrival as well.

Had West Ham understood Haller’s playing style more, however, they may well have kept Chicharito at the club. The duo would have dovetailed off each other perfectly.

Unfortunately for the Hammers fans, however, we will never know just how good the partnership could have been.
