West Ham United made a monumental error by not signing Ajax star Calvin Bassey when he was just a young boy.
Coincidentally, the Hammers tried to sign Bassey from Glasgow Rangers in the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old left-back joined Ajax instead of West Ham though, for around £27 million (£24 million) according to Fabrizio Romano.

Bassey, who can play as a centre-back as well as a left-back, has been described as ‘sensational’ and has been compared to Virgil van Dijk (talkSPORT).
David Moyes ended up signing Emerson Palmieri from Chelsea, and as good as the Italian has been recently, I still would have much preferred the Scot to bring Bassey to the London Stadium.
What makes missing out on him in the summer even more annoying is that it seems as though West Ham could have actually signed Bassey around eight years ago for absolutely nothing…
West Ham could have signed Calvin Bassey
The Italian born Nigeria international didn’t have anything handed on a plate to him.
His youth career was peppered with rejections from Premier League clubs.
And his former coach Carlos Santos has suggested that West Ham were one of the clubs who turned down the chance to sign the now Ajax star, as quoted by Ajax TV:

“I sent him to West Ham for six weeks trials, they refused him as well, he didn’t sign. He went to Barnet FC, didn’t sign, but this is the process from 12-15.”
West Ham missing out on Bassey for just £24 million is hard enough to take, but the fact that we could have signed him for absolutely nothing makes it even harder to stomach.
The 23-year-old is an exceptional player and will undoubtedly go on to reach the very top.
He is not probably worth roughly double what Ajax paid for him seven months ago. it’s just such a shame that we didn’t take a punt on him all those years ago.
