If West Ham United got it wrong sending Kaelan Casey out to Swansea City for the first half of 2025/26, the Premier League outfit will be hoping a new loan spell at Leyton Orient helps to make amends.
One day before Manchester City moved to within touching distance of a deal for Crystal Palace captain and former Swansea loanee Marc Guehi, another young defender saw his own spell in South Wales come to a premature end.
The Swansea faithful saw shades of Guehi in Kaelan Casey during his first few outings at the Championship outfit.
Particularly, and somewhat ironically, against Guehi’s future employers in a valiant 3-2 defeat in the EFL Cup.

Kaelan Casey joins Leyton Orient after West Ham United cancel Swansea City spell
West Ham made the decision to recall Kaelan Casey on Thursday.
Vitor Matos, who only played the England Under-20 international twice after replacing Alan Sheehan on the touchline in November, admitted that opportunities would remain scarce, especially after signing veteran Joel Ward on a free transfer.
A new move to Leyton Orient in the third tier, then, may be a classic case of going backwards to move forwards.
The Us are a division below Swansea, of course. But, given that Richie Wellens’ side have conceded the most goals in League One, Casey should get plenty of chances to solve Leyton Orient’s obvious defensive deficiencies.
Orient manager Richie Wellens backs Casey to make a big impact
Orient average the seventh-highest possession numbers in the competition, despite currently sitting 18th in the table. Wellens, then, made a point of highlighting Casey’s quality on the ball as well as the physicality his 6ft 1ins frame provides.
“Adding another defender to our ranks is something that I wanted,” Wellens told reporters during Casey’s unveiling on Friday. “And I’m really pleased to have Kaelan with us.
“He has a lot of qualities that will suit the way I want us to play. Kaelan is a ball-playing centre back who is dominant in both boxes. He can do both sides of the game for a modern defender, which I really like.
“He is very highly thought of at his parent club and joins us having experienced some big occasions already this season. He wants to play regular football and, if he can earn his place in the team and have a positive impact on us, then this move will suit all parties.”
England youth ace could force his way into West Ham’s plans
If you could pick only ONE of these players to join West Ham, who are you choosing?
The Hammers have made approaches for all four…
No West Ham youngster has made a bigger impression out on loan this season than Gideon Kodua.
Luton Town are ‘desperate’ to sign Kodua permanently following eight goals in just 13 League One starts. With a relegation battle on the cards for last season’s beaten play-off finalists, Leyton Orient will be praying that Casey can do for them what Kodua has done for Luton.
“My time at Swansea City was a great learning experience but I want to play regular football,” Casey explains. “I believe that Orient is the best place for me to get that whilst also helping the club to move forwards.
“I spoke to [former Swansea teammates and ex-Orient stars] Lawrence Vigouroux and Ethan Galbraith. They both only had good things to say about the set-up, the staff and the fans. That’s another reason I wanted to join and I can’t wait to get going.”
Who knows, given that West Ham also have the worst defensive record in their own division, an impressive run of form between January and June could set Casey up for a very big pre-season at his parent club.
