Swansea reveal the real reason West Ham re-called Kaelan Casey amid Mavropanos blow

Kaelan Casey was always going to return to West Ham United in 2026 but, with his loan spell at Swansea City ending prematurely, he wasn’t supposed to be back at the London Stadium this soon.

To think, back in October, some Swansea fans were drawing comparisons with Marc Guehi.

Guehi, the Crystal Palace captain, England regular and arguably the most coveted centre-back on the market right now, spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan in South Wales.

While the Swans faithful might not have anticipated that Guehi would be on the radars of Barcelona and Manchester City half-a-decade down the line, that Casey was being mentioned in the same breath as one of their greatest modern-day centre-halves was quite the compliment.

Unfortunately for the West Ham United prospect, the men in the dugout did not seem quite so enamoured with young Kaelan Casey.

The England Under-20 international was already finding starts hard to come by under Alan Sheehan. Following his sacking and the subsequent appointment of one-time Liverpool coach Vitor Matos, opportunities became even more scarce for Casey.

The Brentwood-born giant leaves having spent each of the last six Championship matches stuck on the bench. In total, he played only 19 minutes of league football following the appointment of Matos in late-November.

West Ham re-called Junior Robinson from a similarly-frustrating stint north of the border at Livingston last week. Casey, then, is the second to see his loan spell terminated in the space of six days.

“He’s gone back to West Ham. It’s already done,” Matos said during a press conference on Thursday. Unsurprisingly, a lack of regular game time was the deciding factor. “West Ham made the decision, and now it’s about what’s best for Casey, I think.

“It’s always about expectations and where they are in terms of development. What the parent club wants as well for him and then trying to find the best out of that.

“In this situation with Casey, that’s what was decided and we are now moving forward from that.”

Swansea boosted their defensive ranks by bringing in former Joel Ward, a Palace captain before Guehi, on a free transfer. Matos is also confident that Ishe Samuels-Smith, a left-back on loan from Chelsea, can help fill in at centre-back if required.

“In the short-term, Joel Ward can play as a centre-half. Ishe’s had that role at Chelsea before at youth level,” Matos adds. “So we are covered and we have solutions.

“We are comfortable with the solutions we have, and if we look at the market it needs to be to improve the team.”

Konstantinos Mavropanos blow could open the door for Casey

The aforementioned Robinson was sent out to Boreham Wood having made only one appearance in the Scottish Premiership at Livingston. Casey is likely to be farmed out again later this month, too. Perhaps to another bottom-half Championship club or a League One promotion chaser.

In the meantime, there is a chance that Casey would be included in the matchday roster for Saturday’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur. Konstantinos Mavropanos is expected to miss out having suffered a neck injury against QPR last time out.

“Dino has had a neck [injury],” Nuno said on Thursday. “[It is] still painful.”

Igor Julio is in talks with Palmeiras, meanwhile.
