Despite beating Leeds in their final Premier League game for at least a year, the Hammers dropped into the Championship for the first time in 14 years because Tottenham beat Everton.

It is a bleak day in the club’s history. Supporters here in east London and beyond will no doubt have seen this coming for a while now, but that does not make it any less painful.
Once West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed, fans vented their frustration to Hammers News.

“I’ll never forgive Aston Villa and in particular their manager who presented Spurs with three points putting out a no win team,” said one supporter.
Another added: “I had hope until that shambolic game against Newcastle last week. We didn’t deserve the help from any other team.”
“Time to go back to basics. The stadium lacks soul, it’ll never be Upton Park. We need to recapture the pride and passion of the past. We’ll return stronger, but changes are needed from the top,” read another comment.
One fan replied: “Should not have to rely on others results, it’s your own that count. Hopefully we can bounce straight back up.”
“I’m gutted but not surprised. Maybe the board will go now. It could be a fresh start for us. Trying to stay positive,” said one fan.
“We’ve been poor all season,” said this fan. “But I’ve seen it all before. Get Scott Parker in – he’ll get us up. And then someone else to keep us up.”

The Championship awaits a team who tasted European glory only three years ago. That is a scandal.
The only thing the club can do now is respond. They did so when they were last relegated from the Premier League and they must do so again now.
Supporters are not going to be happy until there is meaningful change at the top of the club, regardless of what division they are playing in.
However, the need to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking is far too great for the current ownership to ignore. Even if positively no one is actually happy about it, West Ham will still need to find a way back to the top flight under David Sullivan if he does not sell up.
