Ollie Scarles is West Ham United’s shining new star, and David Moyes had a very strong opinion about him two years ago.
David Moyes was the West Ham manager when Ollie Scarles started to make a name for himself in the under-18s.
It was actually Moyes who gave Scarles his first team debut at the end of 2022 when he was just 16, during our UEFA Europa Conference League group-stage win over FCSB in Romania.
However, Julen Lopetegui handed the teenager his Premier League debut away at Bournemouth two years later.

Scarles texted Lopetegui after the Spaniard was sacked, thanking him for giving him the opportunity.

And since then, the 19-year-old has gone from strength to strength. We are so, so lucky to have him at the London Stadium.
He was truly outstanding for West Ham against Arsenal on Saturday, when he made his first Premier League start for the club, and club captain Jarrod Bowen lauded him after the game.
Scarles has been a star in the making for quite some time, and now we’ve got a front seat view of him maturing into a top level level.
What David Moyes said about West Ham starlet Ollie Scarles
The Hammers youngster seems to be primed for stardom.
He clearly has all of the attributes needed to succeed in the Premier League.
But what did Moyes think about the 19-year-old during his time in charge at the London Stadium.
According to The Athletic, the Hammers hierarchy asked the Scot what he thought of Scarles back in 2023 just before the start of the season, after he played a behind-closed-doors friendly against Stevenage Borough.

Moyes is said to have ‘confidently said that Scarles would progress into a Premier League footballer’.
Good stuff that is.
David Moyes was often criticised for the way in which he handled our youth team players, but he obviously knew what he was talking about regarding Ollie Scarles.
Thankfully Scarles was one of the youngsters who remained at the London Stadium during Moyes’s tenure.
I’m convinced that he will end up being a West Ham legend or he’ll earn us tens or millions. Not too bad eh?
