West Ham United head coach Julen Lopetegui still has plenty of work to do in the summer transfer window.
It’s been all quiet on the western front over the past week as far as transfers go, after the Hammers sealed a deal for Max Kilman.
Julen Lopetegui has made a fine start to the summer transfer window, but the West Ham chief needs at least three or four more signings, if he is to oversee some genuine progress at the London Stadium.
The Spaniard is clearly prioritising the addition of a new striker, but a new central midfielder apparently features very high up on his summer agenda as well.
With Flynn Downes having left to join Southampton, the Hammers are very light indeed in the middle of the park.
Lopetegui absolutely has to address that before the new season starts.
And the latest report from the Times points towards the Spaniard doing exactly that.
West Ham could sign midfielder in the summer transfer window
Lopetegui has so many important jobs to do between now and the end of the transfer window.
However, signing a midfield powerhouse will be his second most pressing task in my view.
And it seems like Lopetegui agrees with that notion.

According to The Times, West Ham are in fact interested in signing Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay this summer.
It was previously claimed by insiders at the London Stadium that the Hammers aren’t actually in the race to sign the powerful midfielder.
However, that may well not be the case, and I firmly believe that McTominay should be a player who Lopetegui is all over.
David Moyes admitted this summer that he tried to sign the 27-year-old for the Hammers last year, as quoted by The National:
“Lots of managers have hard luck stories about players that get away and McTominay is one of those for me because I tried to sign him for West Ham last summer. It was always going to be hard to replace Declan Rice with any one player when he joined Arsenal, and we were not planning to do that – we wanted to bring in a couple of midfielders instead. We bought two really good players in James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez, so that was the cover, but Scott was certainly one of the players we had a big interest in as well. He is a good all-round midfielder, but to me his best attributes are arriving in the area, or the edges of it, at the right time to score or make some chances. McTominay was a player who I felt I needed at the time, but we didn’t quite get it over the line and he went on to score a lot of big goals for Manchester United last season instead.”
It’s a shame that West Ham didn’t manage to sign Scott McTominay then, but hopefully Lopetegui can succeed where Moyes failed in the current summer transfer window.
The Scot has absolutely everything we need in the middle of the park, what with his tremendous power, energy, stamina, athleticism and a knack for scoring important goals.
Whether or not the Hammers board will be prepared to pay Man United what they want for McTominay remains to be seen though.
