West Ham could lose Edson Alvarez in January as Champions League club come knocking

Edson Alvarez has been a big disappointment since joining West Ham United in my opinion.

West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez has seriously underperformed this season.

Alvarez allegedly wants out of West Ham, after a tumultuous 2024/25 campaign under the hapless Julen Lopetegui.

With Lopetegui having been sacked now though, and Graham Potter coming in to the London Stadium to replace him, could Alvarez still have a future with the Hammers?

That remains very much up for debate.

Personally, I don’t think he’s well suited to the Premier League due to his inability to keep his cool when the heat is on.

And now it seems like Alvarez may well have an opportunity to leave the London Stadium in the January transfer window.

Champions League club ask West Ham about Edson Alvarez

The 27-year-old midfielder’s future may well lie away from the London Stadium it seems.

Let’s be honest, he has been far too outspoken in the past about his desire to move away from West Ham one day.

And now he might just get his wish.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Monaco have approached West Ham about signing Alvarez in the January transfer window.

The Italian journalist took to his X account to share a big update on the Mexico international’s future with the Hammers:

West Ham signed Alvarez from Ajax in the summer of 2023 for around £35 million (BBC).

Despite initially impressing at the London Stadium, Alvarez’s reckless nature has proven to be costly to West Ham on numerous occasions.

He has received two red cards this season already after making ridiculously stupid decisions whilst already on a yellow card.

In addition to that, he’s picked up a whopping 21 bookings in just 60 games for the Hammers!

He has been in really poor form this season, and doesn’t seem to have recovered physically from the hamstring injury he sustained in the summer whilst playing for Mexico.

Whilst Edson Alvarez has been very good for West Ham at times, I think Graham Potter can definitely make a big upgrade on him.

The Mexican certainly isn’t the player I thought he would be for the Hammers.

West Ham are crying out for more athleticism and physicality in the middle of the park, and if Monaco are prepared to offer us a big fee for Edson Alvarez, we absolutely should sell him.

However, letting him leave on loan without an obligation to buy included in the deal would be utterly pointless.
