West Ham boss David Moyes must use Ander Herrera blueprint on Chelsea superstar and ‘follow him to the toilet’

David Moyes must use Flynn Downes to shadow Joao Felix during the West Ham United vs Chelsea clash tomorrow.

The 23-year-old star is expected to return for Chelsea after he was handed a three game ban following a horror tackle on his debut that resulted in his suspension.

West Ham welcome Chelsea to the London Stadium for the 12:30 Premier League kick-off tomorrow.

And it is an absolutely huge game for both sides, with three points very much needed for David Moyes and Graham Potter.

I have already highlighted how Moyes must start Downes against the Blues. And the Scot should use him to man-mark the dangerous Joao Felix out of the game…

David Moyes must use special plan for West Ham vs Chelsea clash

There hasn’t been a better example of man-marking in recent history than the job that Ander Herrera did for Manchester United on Chelsea legend Eden Hazard at Old Trafford back in 2017.

The midfielder did not give the Belgian superstar an inch of space, and he literally followed him all over the pitch.

Famously, Herrera once said that he would have followed Hazard to the toilet if he had to (talkSPORT):

“At that time, Hazard was the best player in the league, with the best stats and everything. Chelsea were on fire, and Mourinho decided that I was the man to stop him. Two days before [the match], I said: ‘I’m going to try my best. Even if he goes to the toilet, I will follow him’.”

I really believe that Moyes needs to use this exact blueprint tomorrow.

Joao Felix put in an unbelievable performance for Chelsea on his debut, and he was quite simply unplayable. The Portuguese star is man of many talents and has the ability to win the game against the Hammers with a moment of magic.

So how about not giving the Chelsea star the chance to do that to West Ham?

Flynn Downes has the skillset to keep Felix quiet. He is incredibly energetic with impressive stamina levels. He’s also very strong and is a tenacious tackler.

West Ham need to make it as uncomfortable for Chelsea and Felix as is humanly possible. I believe the best way to do that will be for Moyes to delve into the archives and copy the blueprint for success laid out by Jose Mourinho to combat Eden Hazard.
