West Ham United boss David Moyes has not had too much to be disappointed about this season.

West Ham could go three points off third with a game in hand if they beat Leeds

No surprise given West Ham are enjoying their best season for 35 years.

But this week the Scot says he suffered a rare taste of it.

West Ham reclaimed fourth place in the Premier League when they beat bitter rivals Tottenham two weeks ago.

High flying Hammers right in the European mix despite harsh Man City defeat last time out

The Hammers were then desperately unfortunate to lose 2-1 at record breaking Man City last time out.

Yet they held onto fourth spot right up until Chelsea and Everton won on Thursday night against Liverpool and West Brom respectively.

As a result West Ham dropped down to sixth place. And Moyes’s men will end up in seventh on goal difference if Spurs beat Palace on Sunday.

A win over Leeds on Monday night will see West Ham rise back up to fifth.

But Moyes showed how far West Ham have come when he admitted ahead of the clash with Marcelo Bielsa’s men that he and his players were disappointed to see themselves drop out of the top four (whufc.com).

Moyes admits he and his players were disappointed to see themselves drop out of top four ahead of Leeds clash

“I have to say we’re big outsiders for the Champions League because there’s lots of teams there,” Moyes said in his pre-match press conference (whufc.com).

“The resilience, the commitment, the determination the players have shown, nothing would surprise me with them, it really wouldn’t.

“I think at the start if you’d have given me top 10 I’d have said ‘thanks very much it’s been an incredible season for West Ham’. It would show that progress has been made…

“(There’s) a little bit (of excitement at the thought of qualifying for the Champions League while others are under pressure to do so), a little bit.

‘I’ve got to say there was a sense of disappointment. But we’re tough’

“But I’ve got to say, there was a sense of disappointment when we seen ourselves dropped out of it (the top four) the other night.

“So that gives you a feeling of how we feel about it. We’re tough and we know when you’ve got an opportunity you’ve got to take it.

“I think if we didn’t make it we wouldn’t beat ourselves up about it.

“But what we’ll try and do is do everything we can to give ourselves a fighting chance of being in and amongst it.”

It says everything about the standards at West Ham under Moyes that the squad were gutted to drop out of the top four.

But they must now re-focus. Because victory over Leeds on Monday night will lift them back up to fifth regardless of results elsewhere.

And they could well be just three points off third place WITH a game in the hand if the Manchester derby goes to form.
