West Ham and Rangers stars Michail Antonio and Kemar Roofe snubbed for Jamaica squad as part of cost-cutting exercise report claims

West Ham and Rangers stars Michail Antonio and Kemar Roofe were snubbed for the Jamaica squad as part of cost-cutting exercise.

That’s according to a new report from The Voice after the West Ham and Rangers strikers were omitted from the latest Reggae Boyz selection.

West Ham and Rangers are both enjoying amazing campaigns in this season’s Europa League.

David Moyes’s Hammers are vying for a European spot in the Premier League while Rangers are fighting for the Scottish title.

And both clubs are flying their respective flags high in Europe with West Ham beating Sevilla in the last 16 to set up a quarter-final against Lyon while Rangers face Braga in the last eight have memorably seen off Borussia Dortmund and Rd Star Belgrade.

Those hotly anticipated quarter-finals take place after this two-week international break.

West Ham play Everton on Sunday April 3rd while Rangers have the Old Firm derby at Ibrox.

Both sides then play Lyon and Braga four days later, West Ham at home first and Rangers away in Portugal.

Moyes and Gers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be desperate for their players to steer clear of injury and get some much-needed rest between now and then.

So the prospect of a 15,000 mile round trip and three games in a week for West Ham striker Antonio and Rangers forward Roofe would have been a real concern for both clubs.

There was a massive twist for West Ham and Rangers this week when both Antonio and Roofe were left out of the Jamaica for games against El Salvador, Canada and Honduras.

Other British-based players were selected for the squad by temporary coach Paul Hall, though, with the likes of Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey, QPR’s Andre Gray and Derby’s Ravel Morrison called up.

Now a new report from The Voice claims West Ham and Rangers stars Antonio and Roofe were snubbed for the latest Jamaica squad as part of a cost-cutting exercise.

“England-based Hall, who has lost his opening four games at the helm by employing pretty similar defensive tactics to the axed head coach Theodore Whitmore, has controversially shaken up his squad,” The Voice reports.

“Hall, who is employed as the U23 head coach at Championship outfit QPR, will use these three contests to try to prove the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) that he is a real contender for the role on a permanent basis.

“His choice of players could let him down, and it would not be a surprise if his original selection was trimmed by the JFF as a cost-cutting exercise.

“Jamaican fans are not exactly ecstatic about these forthcoming matches being promoted with so much enthusiasm by the JFF. They are bombarding social media platforms with negative comments, and that was before the latest squad was announced on March 21.”

Whatever the reason West Ham and Rangers will privately be ecstatic that two key players can get a decent rest ahead of their respective season run ins.

And who knows West Ham and Rangers could be playing out a dream Battle of Britain Europa League final come what May.
