The Hammers earned a really hard-fought point against Newcastle at St James’ Park, and things are finally starting to look up.

David Moyes would have been absolutely delighted with his side’s performance yesterday evening. Aside from perhaps Thilo Kehrer, every single player was more than deserving of credit.

One player in particular who put in a superb display was big-money summer signing Lucas Paqueta.

Against Newcastle yesterday, the 25-year-old put in arguably his best performance in a West Ham shirt to date.

And he really impressed one of his teammates in particular…

The Czech Republic International was left in awe by the performance of Lucas Paqueta at St James’ Park yesterday evening.

Coufal spoke to WHUFC.com after the game, and singled out Paqueta for praise when asked about his side’s performance:

“I think he needed some time to adapt and understand what the Premier League is about, but I think now he has got a lot of confidence. He scored the goal at Leeds from a penalty and then he was brilliant here. He never panics with the ball and his technique, his skills are unreal. He is playing like he was on the Copacabana. He is enjoying his football and sometimes when I see him with the ball, I am enjoying it on the pitch too and I don’t want to interrupt him – pass to me if you want, but if not then no worries! Some players have these skills and some players have to fight.”

Coufal is spot on here, Paqueta was quite simply sensational for West Ham against Newcastle yesterday.

The Brazilian was crucial to the way in which David Moyes’s men grew back into the game, and he finally showed us why the club splashed out £51 million on obtaining his signature.

He levelled the scores at St James’ Park today just after the half an hour mark.

It wasn’t only his goal that made such a big difference to the Hammers though.

Paqueta got his foot on the ball in tight areas and took the heat off the rest of the team. He was brave, intelligent with his passing and didn’t shirk the physical battle either.

The challenge for the 25-year-old now will be to keep putting in the kind of performances for West Ham that he proved he’s capable of yesterday against Newcastle.

And I’m sure that he will.
