‘Unfair’ Callum Wilson treatment at West Ham set to continue because Nuno knows best

Nuno Espirito Santo admits Callum Wilson’s fate at West Ham United is “unfair”, but – sadly for the striker – it simply has to continue in this way.

There have been calls among some West Ham United fans for Wilson to start. He, after all, is surely the best finisher of all three strikers Nuno has in his squad.

What changes are you making to this team? Just don’t think Wilson should start 😬

Nuno admits that Wilson’s lack of game time is “unfair” on a player who has scored two last-minute winners this season. The striker himself, meanwhile, has made little secret of his desire to play more football.

There is little reason, however, to grant him that wish.

Wilson cannot start for West Ham United in the relegation battle

Neither Pablo Felipe nor Taty Castellanos can match Wilson for goalscoring prowess. Little about what they’ve shown while clad in claret and blue suggests they ever will be able to, either.

That, however, just isn’t the point. Pablo and Taty offer West Ham energy and, frankly, are much more conducive to ensuring the team are even in a position where Wilson can genuinely make an impact.

Pablo scores a lovely goal 4 minutes in…

Wilson has only completed one Premier League game all season, which was the 3-0 defeat to Wolves. At this stage of his career, it’s up for debate on how many minutes he can actually play.

Nuno’s current system has worked out

It’s understandable that some would want to see him start, with either Pablo or Taty coming off the bench. Still, surely this team are better served in trying to keep things tight, and then bringing goals off the bench rather than the other way around.

Nuno has made this team difficult to beat. What you lose in goals from Wilson being on the pitch, you gain in being able to press further up the park.

Is it perfect? Absolutely not. Yet, the system Nuno has deployed since mid-January has largely worked, and it should be trusted to get over the line.

As such, there is little reason to change it.
