Stars Michail Antonio and Callum Wilson make bet which could seriously benefit West Ham and Newcastle

Stars Michail Antonio and Callum Wilson make bet which could seriously benefit their clubs West Ham and Newcastle.

Antonio has teamed up with Newcastle star and serial West Ham antagonist Wilson for the new Footballer’s Football podcast on BBC Sounds.

West Ham striker Antonio has been used to being in the spotlight for his brilliant performances over the last couple of years.

But a recent dip in form – Antonio has not scored for West Ham since netting the winner against Spurs in October – has seen him make headlines for a lack of goals instead.

Antonio looked back to something like his best in the second half of West Ham’s superb 3-2 win over Chelsea, though.

A club that knows all about a lack of goals this season is relegation-threatened Newcastle.

But in Wilson they have a striker who, when fit, is always in and amongst the goals as he proved against Burnley and Norwich recently, earning the Magpies four precious points and a first win of the season.

Both Antonio and Wilson have six Premier League goals each so far this season.

And now the stars have made a bet which could seriously benefit West Ham and Newcastle.

Speaking on the latest episode of their Footballer’s Football podcast, the duo have challenged one another to see who finishes top scorer between them in the Premier League this season.

“You know what we should have a friendly bet for this podcast,” Antonio told Wilson as they discussed the fact they were both on six league goals when speaking on the Footballer’s Football podcast.

“Who finishes on more goals this season.”

Wilson replied: “Put some respect on my name you know I’m gonna finish top! Nah I’m joking! Do you know what we’re both in different ends of the league table, we’re both going for different things, I think yea we could have a friendly little (bet).

“You can get me a coffee, a flat white oat milk.”

West Ham star Antonio agreed, saying: “Alright, that’s what we’ll do, a nice little coffee end of the season, who gets the most goals.”

Antonio then suggested assists should count as half a goal in the tally – given he already has four to Wilson’s zero.

But the Newcastle number nine said: “This is about goals, we’re strikers, we’re judged on goals we’re not judged on assists. You can’t just run into people and then kick the ball sideways and get assists, that don’t count, I see you the other day… speedboat no driver. Just joking!”

It’s all fun and games.

But a bet is a bet and there is pride at stake for two very driven professionals.

So this little wager could seriously benefit both West Ham and Newcastle as the duo try to outdo one another each week. David Moyes and Eddie Howe will undoubtedly welcome the good-spirited incentive between friendly rivals.

Wilson is more of a natural out and out striker than Antonio. But the West Ham man has much more to his overall game.

Here’s hoping both men can stay injury free and may the best man win.
