Specsavers brilliantly troll UEFA ref over West Ham controversy in Europa League

We all know the saying and British optical giant Specsavers aren’t missing a trick as they jump on West Ham ref controversy.

I did my bit to help West Ham best prepare for the big Europa League last 16 clash in Freiburg.

If you read my report in the build-up to the first leg you’d have known all about referee Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez.

I highlighted the Spanish official admitted being at fault for an infamous ghost goal that once cost Barcelona the title.

Don’t say we didn’t want you about UEFA referee

My report also revealed West Ham ref Hernandez Hernandez was on duty during a La Liga VAR audio leak storm.

But the most obvious warning sign was the fact he intervened in West Ham’s Europa League semi-final with Eintracht Frankfurt to send off Aaron Cresswell.

Fast forward to West Ham’s match in Freiburg and, true to form, the ref was involved in one of the most controversial decisions of the season so far.

Hernandez Hernandez was sent to the screen to look at a clear handball in the dying moments of West Ham’s 1-0 defeat.

Spaniard made shocking West Ham penalty snub decision

But after FOUR minutes of deliberations he elected not to award the Hammers a clear penalty.

The official was the only person who felt that was the correct decision.

And West Ham boss David Moyes slammed the call after the game.

Now Specsavers have brilliantly trolled the UEFA ref over the West Ham controversy in the Europa League.

British optical giant has it’s new advert

We all know the saying ‘Should have gone to Specsavers’.

It is the British optical giant’s advertising slogan suggesting you need your eyes tested.

Well Specsavers have posted a two-minute clip of Hernandez Hernandez reviewing the footage on the pitchside VAR monitor alongside the words: “Director’s cut of our latest ad.”

Brilliant.

And sums up the farcical nature of the incident perfectly.

As funny as the post is, the decision could have serious ramifications for West Ham.

Knockout European football is often decided by fine margins.

Now Freiburg have something to hold on to. And if it proves a decisive moment in this tie, West Ham will pay a heavy price.
