West Ham United are reportedly now eyeing up a move to sign Newcastle United transfer target Edson Alvarez.

According to a report form Mexican TV station TUDN, Newcastle tried to sign the 25-year-old defensive midfielder in the summer window, but failed with a £25 million bid.

Ajax kept hold of the 58-capped Mexico international in the end, but his future seems to lie away from Amsterdam.

Both David Moyes and Eddie Howe will be desperate to bolster their central midfield ranks at the London Stadium and St James’ Park respectively either in January or next summer.

And Edson Alvarez is one of the very best. So it’s little wonder why both would want to sign him.

West Ham eyeing Edson Alvarez

The Hammers could challenge Newcastle for the 25-year-old’s signature in either January or next summer according to a report from 90 Min.

The Mexican is a truly elite player, and he would be a tremendous addition for either West Ham or Newcastle.

Alvarez has been described as ‘unstoppable’ by ESPN.

In 10 Eredivisie outings this season, the 25-year-old has averaged 2.3 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 2.8 clearances per game. He has made 60 passes on average per game and has recorded a completion rate of 87.8% (Who Scored).

The Ajax ace has also bagged two assists during those outings.

Alvarez can play in the centre-back positions as well as defensive midfield.

The Mexico international is a player destined for the very top. And he seems primed to make the move from the Eredivisie to the Premier League.

Quite how much Ajax will demand for his signature remains to be seen. He will undoubtedly cost a lot of money though.

And if West Ham manage to beat Newcastle to the signing of Edson Alvarez, it would be a really big statement indeed.
