A reporter close to David Sullivan has lifted the lid on what a source has told him is the truth behind rumours of major new West Ham deal for Kurt Zouma.

Hot on the heels of Jarrod Bowen signing a new seven-year deal with West Ham came more welcome news yesterday.

According to an “exclusive” report from TEAMtalk, the Hammers are planning to open talks with new captain Kurt Zouma over a new deal.

The 28-year-old French defender has had a rollercoaster West Ham career so far.

But he has always been – for the most part – a consistent performer on the pitch since his £29m move from Chelsea.

The infamous cat-kicking saga was undeniably a low point for Zouma. But he managed to maintain his focus while running a gauntlet of hate and enduring injuries to help West Ham lift their first major trophy for 43 years in June.

Zouma, whose middle name ‘Happy’ is very apt for his character, was rewarded with the West Ham captaincy following the departure of Declan Rice.

And he has responded by maintaining a consistently high level of performance.

So West Ham fans were delighted to read news that he could be handed a new deal with the club.

As football supporters know better than most, though, you can’t always believe everything you read. And that seems to be the case here.

Because a reporter close to David Sullivan has lifted the lid on what a source has told him is the truth behind rumours of major new West Ham deal for Zouma.

‘Zero rush to renew Zouma deal’ claims source

Hugh Southon of Claret and Hugh says his top contact at West Ham has completely denied the reports that Zouma is set for a new deal.

The source claims the report is ‘inaccurate’ and that the club is in no hurry to extend Zouma’s deal as he has nearly two years left on his current contract with an option to extend.

The report also cites Zouma’s history of knee injuries as another reason for West Ham being in no hurry to extend the popular defender’s stay right now.

“He has really bad knees which is why we put him in a four year deal,” Southon’s top source told him.

“It’s also why we’re not playing him in Europe (so resting midweek).

“We have the best part of two years left on his current contract plus an option. There is ZERO rush to renew.”
