Alphonse Areola faces an uncertain future at West Ham according to a report from L’Equipe.
The Hammers completed the signing of the 28-year-old goalkeeper on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain during the summer transfer window.
West Ham are believed to have an £11 million purchase option on the Frenchman as well (Wyn Foot).
Areola is still yet to play a Premier League game for the Hammers. The PSG owned goalkeeper has played eight times for West Ham though. Those appearances have come in the Carabao Cup and the Europa League.
The Frenchman has conceded just five goals during those outings and has kept five clean sheets in the process.
The agile shot-stopper has looked very impressive during his eight appearances so far this season. As things stand though, he still hasn’t done enough to usurp number one Lukasz Fabianski in David Moyes’s eyes.
Alphonse Areola facing uncertain future at West Ham
The 6ft 5in goalkeeper is desperate to be part of France’s World Cup squad next year.
That’s according to L’Equipe who claim that Areola’s lack of regular action at West Ham could lead to him returning to PSG in the summer.
The thing is, West Ham have an option to buy the 28-year-old. So it will be in our hands. If Moyes doesn’t fancy him though, for whatever reason, then a return to PSG will be on the cards for Areola in the summer.
The Telegraph claimed only a few days ago that the Hammers are leading the race to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on a free transfer in the summer.
Johnstone’s agent is David Sullivan’s old favourite Will Salthouse and the fact that he’s available on a free transfer in the summer feels fairly ominous.
Missing out on Areola would be incredibly short-sighted. Let’s hope that isn’t the case and Moyes presses ahead and signs the Frenchman on a permanent basis in the summer.
The 28-year-old PSG-owned ace is a truly top-class goalkeeper. He really should be starting more games for us now.
Whether David Moyes sees it that way though is another matter entirely.
