Newcastle star Chris Wood allegedly taunted West Ham defender Kurt Zouma with cat meows

Newcastle United star Chris Wood allegedly taunted West Ham defender Kurt Zouma with cat meows sparking a complaint to the referee.

That’s according to widespread claims online after the 1-1 draw between West Ham and Newcastle at the London Stadium on Saturday.

West Ham boss David Moyes has made it clear he is going to select Zouma after the unsavoury footage which showed him abusing his cat emerged last week.

And the Frenchman started for West Ham against the Magpies having missed last weekend’s draw with Leicester due to illness.

The world and its wife has had its say with calls for West Ham to suspend and even sack Zouma.

Newcastle fans went to bizarre lengths to goad the West Ham man by bringing inflatable cats to the game.

And according to claims online, £25m January signing Wood, taunted Zouma by meowing at him like a cat throughout the game.

The claims also state that Zouma’s central defensive partner and West Ham’s goalscorer Craig Dawson complained to the referee about Wood’s taunting (Foot01, Tigerdroppings NewsToday24).

Wood has been hailed some sort of hero on social media for his antics.

Which is probably a good distraction tactic for the player who was completely bossed by Zouma and Dawson throughout.

West Ham are unlikely to face Wood playing up front for Newcastle again, though.

With the vast wealth at their disposal he was clearly a stop-gap signing who won’t get a kick for the Geordies beyond the summer.

It seems this is the kind of ridicule Zouma is going to have to live with now.

He has undoubtedly tarnished his name and reputation. And the West Ham ace must live with the consequences.

But Hammers fans feel much of the reaction has been ridiculously over the top.

And there is a certain level of irony to anyone at Newcastle taking the moral high ground with the strength of feeling towards the involvement of their Saudi Arabian ownership given the country’s human rights record.

West Ham boss Moyes, vice-chair Karren Brady and the likes of Micah Richards and Jamie Carragher have called for forgiveness for Zouma and to move on following his punishment.

We all know the way the fickle world of football works. It will become old news when the next high-profile footballer hits the headlines for doing something stupid.

So we shouldn’t have to wait too long.
